White Balance

1. Describe the steps for adjusting the white balance on a camcorder or digital film camera.

1. Locate the white balance setting on the camera and select the manual or custom WB option.
2. Have the subject or an assistant aim a white card or sheet of paper at the camera.
3. Zoom in on the card or sheet of paper to fill 80%-100% of the frame with white. Be sure your exposure and focus settings are properly set.
4. Press and hold the Set button until the camera confirms that white balance has been acquired.

2. Describe the steps for adjusting the manual white balance on a DSLR (this is NOT in the book, and many more people are shooting video, especially corporate and lower budget work, with a DSLR.  You will need to research this! If you want a camera for reference, use the common Canon T6 DSLR)

Click the Quick Settings button then select or tap on AWB or click the Up/WB button on the back of the camera, then change settings to these:

• Daylight (5200 K)
• Shade (7000 K)
• Cloudy (6000 K)
• Tungsten light (3200 K)
• White fluorescent light (4000 K)

Or if you want to set a custom white balance:

1. Place a white sheet of paper in front of the camera.
2. Set your camera to Auto White Balance.
3. Take a photo of the paper that fills as much of the frame as possible.
4. Open the Custom White Balance menu.
5. When your chosen photo is on screen, either click the Set button or tap on SET on screen, then select OK.
6. Press the WB/Up button, or go to White Balance in Quick Settings and select the Custom option to use the white balance settings captured from the reference photo.
